Kampung Baru, the "New Village", was once a Malay settlement at the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur built to give Malays the possibility to live in a traditional Malay settlement while still working in the city. Now, of course, the city has grown around it, the "New Village" is part of history, and it is located very centrally in KL. The land is extremely valuable and there is a constant threat that the settlement will be relocated to reclaim the land for expansions of the economic core of Malaysia - more high rise office buildings. Kampung Baru is still inhabited mostly by lower to middle class Malays, and the food markets are famous, especially the Saturday night market
